Juan ‘SURFO’, is often mistaken for Jeff Spicoli (Sean Penn's character from the classic film, Fast Times at Ridgemont High) – but truly he is an original, one-of-a-kind ‘dude’ from a large Costa Rican family, born and raised right here in the Nosara area. Being one of the first local surfers in the area, he was nicknamed ‘SURFO'.
SURFO watched Nosara, a small isolated poor town, grow into a vibrant beach community – working and landscaping for newcomers helped him learn English. From one gifted surfboard, surf stoke took over and his collection of boards grew. Surfboards were rented, lessons were taught from his house by word-of-mouth. Juan's dream came true when he was able to open a small simple surf shop – the original, El Punto, 17 years ago.
Now, Juan Surfo's Surf Shop is located 300 metres from the beach - the first surf shop and closest shop to the beach on Guiones North Side. His also has a rental property, Surf n' Stay, next door with four vacation rental apartments.
SURFO is proud to be one, if not the only, first TICO owned business in the beach area and is extremely grateful to the many people who have given him opportunities that helped him achieve his dreams.
If you want to learn to surf, rent a board, or find a place to stay, contact SURFO - he is always ready to help and a ton of fun. Thank you for supporting small local businesses.
